Thanks for the feedback, Frank! I understand your point about not recognizing the shape without the word mark—that was something we struggled with when designing since “airships” or blimps don’t tend to be very recognizable as shapes on their own without being more illustrative than something that works well as a logo. They could easily be mistaken for a torpedo or an unusual American football. Encapsulating the airship in an “A” shape helps give it some visual interest without leaning too hard on the airship shape alone. Also, we wanted to avoid using the airship shape on its own as to avoid brand confusion with Urban Airship. In terms of simplifying the mark, that is certainly something we can explore. Although, the limited complexity in the mark as it stands gives the airship some dimension, both to suggest the airship shape is round and to reference the negative space you might find in the cutout of a capital “A” letter. The jet was to help give the airship shape some perspective, but we can certainly show it without the jet if thats something people would like to see. -James

Hi James,
I like the idea of an airship flying across the capital "A". TBH, though, if you hadn't mentioned the airship or added the "airship" wordmark, I wouldn't have recognized it. The logo is also a bit busy for my taste. Would it make sense to fill the whole airship in the foreground color (of the "A") and just do its outline in the background color? Maybe also leaving out the "jet"?

I’m James, a graphic designer with the OpenStack Foundation, and I’ve been working with the Airship leadership team to design a new logo.
The concept is pretty accessible, with an icon of a stylized airship silhouette flying across a capital “A” shape. It works well both stacked and horizontally and in single or multiple colors. The color palette incorporates the teal and sky tones from the current landing page.
I’ve attached a PDF showing the logo in a few different formats, as well as a couple of mockups to show you some practical applications. In case the attached document does not make it do you, you can view it on Dropbox here. <https://www.dropbox.com/s/zqtnbho6t5j1wg1/Airship_Logo.pdf?dl=0>
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this design or if you have any other feedback you think might be important for the Airship brand.
Thank you!
